Parah’s Apartment, August 13, 3:45 PM

“Where are you?” Banyan demanded, shaking his fist angrily at Parah’s obviously unoccupied unit.

The reporter was never home. He’d driven by at odd hours ever since Chloe dug up her address. She has to come home sometime, he reasoned. I’ll wait. He snarled menacingly.

He’d been angry when he’d left Vera and Chloe at his second hideout. His anger—his need to take all his frustration out on the one person who was the cause of all that was going wrong—had assured him the reporter would be home this time.

He couldn’t believe how much this Parah woman had cost him—the money to spring Chloe from jail, the downturn in his business. And the money wasn’t the worst part. Banyan had been forced to move his base of operations to his Austell hideout. The place had been in the “family” ever since Miss Kitty’s son died, and he’d grown attached to it. He didn’t like having to have Julius and Glenn meet over there. He normally let almost no one know about the place. But he’d had no choice, just in case Chloe had given up information. Moreover, Banyan hated anyone who challenged him, and Parah had taken pleasure in making him the brunt of all her sarcastic comments. It was too much. It was time for Parah to pay.

Where the hell was the reporter? He glanced at his watch. According to Glenn and Julius, she had taken a leave of absence from work. So what was she up to? Those goons he called employees would have him believe she was starting a new career at, of all places, some gentleman’s club.

Wait! It dawned on him. The reporter was probably doing some kind of undercover story on Athena’s. Why hadn’t this occurred to him before?

Banyan turned the key, and the car’s engine roared to life. If he remembered correctly, Athena’s was only a short drive from Parah’s neighborhood.

Banyan saw the Athena’s marquee blinking brightly in the distance. As he approached the club, he noticed a big sign announcing a BBW gala being held there. Maybe Parah was writing about the gala. Or maybe she didn’t have any connection to the club at all and Glenn and Julius were as stupid as they looked. Whatever the case, the idea of feasting his eyes on a roomful of women took his mind off his need for revenge for the moment.

He pulled into a parking space under the marquee and turned over the idea of going to the bash. Maybe he’d get lucky and Parah would be there, allowing him an opportunity to find new victims at the party and kidnap Parah. He could kill two birds with one stone.

He laughed at his play on words, finally starting to feel a little better.

Of course, that would still leave Falco. All in due time, he told himself. Besides, he would feel good about taking care of Parah first. Although he detested Falco more, he wanted to use the reporter as an example.

He slowly pulled a white handkerchief from his breast pocket and wiped the sweat from his brow.
